eventration of the diaphragm

Q: Complete eventration of the hemidiaphragm usually happens on? - select one

A) left
B) right

Answer: A

Diaphragmatic eventration is defined as a thinning of a portion or all of the diaphragmatic muscle by fibroelastic tissue.

For a not completely understood reason:
  • Partial eventration mostly happens on the right hemidiaphragm
  • Complete eventration mostly happens on the left hemidiaphragm
Bilateral involvement is rare.

Clinically, it may cause tachypnea, palpitations, chest pain, chronic cough, recurrent pneumonia, dyspepsia, GERD, and epigastric pain.
