Answer: Urine odor can be a strong predictor of underlying disease:
- Abnormally pungent odor - bacteriuria (due to production of ammonia by bacteria)
- Sweet or fruity odor - ketonuria
- Maple syrup odor - maple syrup urine disease
- Musty or mousy odor - phenylketonuria
- sweaty feet odor - isovaleric acidemia
- rancid butter or fishy odor - hypermethioninemia
