Pseudochylothorax

Q: What is Pseudochylothorax?

Answer: Chylothorax must be distinguished from pseudochylothorax, or cholesterol pleurisy, which results from the accumulation of cholesterol crystals in a chronic existing effusion.

The most common causes of pseudochylothorax are
  • chronic rheumatoid pleurisy
  • tuberculosis
  • poorly treated empyema
