CIM has a few characteristic features:
  • Flaccid quadriparesis 
  • Proximal muscles are affected more than distal muscles.
  • Ventilatory failure
  • Facial muscle weakness (may or may not present)
  • Sparing of extraocular muscles (very rarely involved)

  • Intact deep tendon reflexes*
