Q: How to determine the site of lower GI bleed depending on color of stool?

Answer: 

• Maroon stools - probably the source is  right side of the colon
• Bright red blood per rectum - is mostly from left side of the colon
• Melena - is usually consistent with cecal bleeding

Patient may have multiple or diffuse source of bleeding.
